What the Film Tries to Be
Blast aims to be a high-energy action entertainer centered on a middle-class family that refuses to be victims. At its core, it is a female-led action drama where Nila’s journey becomes a statement about standing up against injustice and challenging the tendency to underestimate women.
Narrative Structure – Where It Falters
The biggest weakness lies in the screenplay’s middle portions. The film introduces multiple villains, gangsters, assassins, and corporate criminals, creating a convoluted path before the story reaches its destination. Many of these scenes feel like narrative shortcuts designed mainly to set up the next action sequence rather than organically advancing the plot.
Character Utilisation
Preity Mukhundhan emerges as the heart and soul of the film. Nila remains the central focus throughout, and her action performance carries much of the film’s energy.
Arjun deserves credit for willingly taking a supporting position, allowing the female characters to dominate the narrative.
Abhirami is effective, especially when the character shifts into “Martial Arts Mom” mode. However, the writing limits her by largely confining her to domestic spaces and stereotypical mother-wife duties.
Arjun Chidambaram gets a surprisingly strong role, bringing weight and presence to Abraham, a character that could have easily become one-dimensional.
Visual & Technical Merits
The technical department significantly elevates the film.

The film’s strongest thematic element is its focus on how society often fails to take women seriously. Nila repeatedly proves herself while those around her assume a man must be responsible for the violence and resistance she creates. This recurring idea gives the action sequences a meaningful emotional foundation.
While the message lands effectively, some tonal shifts and emotional detours feel misplaced and occasionally disrupt the flow.
