What the Film Tries to Be

Couple Friendly positions itself as a modern romantic drama with a live-in relationship backdrop, promising something contemporary yet emotionally rooted. The trailer suggests a breezy love story, but the film gradually reveals itself as a relationship drama layered with a surprise emotional turn in the latter half.

Narrative Structure – Where It Falters

The first half is engaging and neatly written. Shiva (Santosh Sobhan), an aspiring interior designer from Nellore, relocates to Chennai and meets Mithra (Manasa Varanasi), who is chasing her own career goals. Their relationship develops organically, with the live-in setup handled with surprising maturity.

However, the second half slightly overstretches itself. The parental opposition track adds drama but occasionally dips into familiar territory. Some hospital scenes and emotional confrontations feel forced and disconnected from the grounded realism of the first half.

Just when the narrative begins to lose momentum, a twist arrives that restores emotional balance. The climax effectively ties earlier narrative threads together, lending cohesion to the overall story.

Character Utilisation

  • Santosh Sobhan delivers a sincere performance, portraying a man constantly battling setbacks. His subtle expressions and authentic slang add depth to Shiva’s character.

  • Manasa Varanasi pleasantly surprises with a mature and composed portrayal. She handles both romantic and emotionally intense moments with confidence.

  • Rajeev Kanakala stands out as Mithra’s father, bringing gravitas to the opposition track.

  • Goparaju Ramana makes an impact in limited screen time.

  • Yogi Babu and Livingston contribute but don’t significantly elevate the proceedings.

Visual & Technical Merits

Cinematography by Dinesh Purushothaman is the film’s strongest technical asset. Real Chennai locations are captured with naturalistic flair, grounding the romance in authenticity.

The editing by Ganesh Siva keeps the runtime crisp at just around two hours. However, the music by Aditya Ravindran lacks memorable songs — a noticeable drawback in a love story that could have benefited from stronger melodic support.

Theme vs Execution

The film explores modern relationships, parental acceptance, and emotional maturity. While the intentions are sincere, the execution slightly falters in maintaining intensity throughout the second half.

There are tonal similarities to mainstream romantic dramas, which dilute the novelty. Still, the emotional core manages to resonate, especially in the climax.

Plus Points

  • Engaging first half

  • Strong performances by the lead pair

  • Mature narration

  • Effective emotional twist

  • Crisp runtime

Minus Points

  • Lack of catchy songs

  • Slightly stretched second half

  • A few forced dramatic sequences

Final Verdict

Couple Friendly is a sincere romantic drama that works best when it stays grounded. While it doesn’t break new ground, it offers enough emotional weight and solid performances to make it a decent watch — especially if approached with measured expectations.

Rating: 2.75/5 ⭐⭐⭐
A neat love story with heart, held back by familiar beats and missing musical magic.
