🎬 Granny Tamil Movie Review

What the Film Tries to Be

Granny aims to be a slow-burn Tamil horror thriller that relies more on atmosphere, psychology, and emotion than conventional jump scares. It attempts to merge rural folklore, family trauma, and supernatural mystery into a grounded horror experience rooted in place and character.

Narrative Structure – Where It Falters

The film follows a parallel narrative—one thread uncovering a mysterious death and another focusing on a techie couple returning to their ancestral home. While this structure builds intrigue initially, the screenplay stretches certain portions, causing a dip in momentum. Some scenes linger longer than required, slightly diluting the tension the film carefully builds.

Character Utilisation

Occhai, portrayed by Vadivukkarasi, is the most fully realised and impactful character. She dominates the narrative with an eerie presence and layered backstory. However, a few supporting characters feel underexplored; their arcs exist more to move the plot forward than to leave a lasting emotional impression.

Visual & Technical Merits

The film scores high in visual mood-setting. The ancestral house location, low-key lighting, and shadow-heavy frames effectively enhance the horror tone. Makeup and prosthetics stand out, especially in shaping Occhai’s unsettling appearance. Background score is subtle yet effective, complementing the suspense without overpowering scenes.

Theme vs Execution

The core theme—buried secrets, guilt, and the lingering impact of past sins—is compelling. While the intention is strong, execution occasionally wavers due to pacing issues. Still, the emotional and thematic payoff works in the latter half, bringing cohesion to the story.

Plus Points

  • Powerful performance by Vadivukkarasi

  • Atmospheric, slow-burn horror

  • Strong makeup and production design

  • Authentic rural setting

Minus Points

  • Slow pacing in the middle portions

  • Limited depth for some supporting characters

  • Overextended scenes reduce tension at times

Final Verdict

Granny succeeds as an atmospheric Tamil horror film that values mood and performance over shock value. Despite minor narrative flaws, its strong central character, immersive visuals, and restrained storytelling make it a worthy watch for horror enthusiasts.
