Mrs. & Mister – Movie Review

Introduction

Mrs. & Mister, written, directed, and led by Vanitha Vijayakumar, is a drama that tries to explore the emotional conflict between a couple around the topic of parenthood. Set in Bangkok and shifting to India, it aims to blend romance, sentiment, comedy, and glamour – but ends up delivering a confused mix.

Storyline

Vanitha and Robert are a married couple living in Bangkok. When Vanitha turns 40, she wishes to have a baby, but Robert strongly opposes the idea. Despite constant quarrels, Vanitha pursues her desire to become a mother. She gets pregnant and secretly leaves for India, fearing Robert will stop her. The story follows Robert’s search for her and unravels why he doesn’t want a child, leading to the emotional crux of the film: will Vanitha go through with the pregnancy?

Performance Highlights:

  • Vanitha Vijayakumar takes center stage as the determined woman battling societal and marital odds. Her performance is intense but often exaggerated, especially in emotional scenes.

  • Robert Master delivers a more subtle performance and manages to handle the emotional scenes involving his character’s internal conflict.

  • Shakila, Power Star Srinivasan, Sriman, Fathima Babu, Aarthi Ganeshkar, and others fill in supporting roles, but most feel like filler content without much narrative weight.

  • Kiran Rathore adds glamour with a dance number, but her appearance doesn’t contribute to the story.

Technical Brilliance:

  • Music (Srikanth Deva): Peppy in songs, adequate in background score.

  • Cinematography (Rajapandi.T, Vishnu Ramakrishnan, TG Kapil): Competent, but lacks visual richness or creativity.

  • Editing: Could have been crisper. The pacing drags, especially in the second half.

Direction and Production:

Vanitha’s attempt to craft a film for the “modern youth” falls short due to an outdated treatment. Though the themes are relevant, the presentation is stuck in the early 2000s style with glamour-driven songs, double entendre dialogues, and an overuse of ensemble comedy scenes. The narrative lacks subtlety and coherence.

Plus

  • A bold theme revolving around a woman’s choice and motherhood

  • Srikanth Deva’s music works for certain scenes

  • Robert’s composed performance

Minus

  • Outdated direction and storytelling style

  • Excessive glamour and double-meaning dialogues

  • Poorly utilized supporting cast

  • Overdramatic performances and forced comedy

Final Thoughts

Mrs. & Mister attempts to address a serious topic with a commercial coating, but the execution turns it into a melodramatic and often confusing mess. The film may appeal to Vanitha’s fans and those looking for nostalgic faces, but lacks the substance or freshness to impress a broader audience.

Rating: ⭐⭐½ / 5
